In December 2007, Mat's father committed suicide, and it was Mat who found him and tried desperately to save him but to no avail. At the same time the business was starting to experience difficulties and Mat's inheritance of £55,000 was put straight into the business to pay the employees salaries. However, all this was to no avail and the business folded in July 2008 leaving him penniless and looking for a new direction. In hindsight there were many mistakes, mostly through naivity and management inexperience, but which have taught Mat invaluable lessons along the way.

Thomas Edison reputedly tried 2000 different versions of the lightbulb until he found the successful version and famously said- "Many of life's failures are experienced by people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up". Successful entrepreneurs such as Richard Branson and Lord Sugar are successful because they have learnt and moved forward from their failures and that is why the Witom Group continues to thrive.

Witom Group was originally set up as a Marketing consultancy in October 2008 and has grown through formation and acquisition to where it is today. Mat believes that a successful company is only as good as the people it employs, and Mat has an exceptional team around him, with a strong ingrained belief that success is built on people. All his Directors are experts in their field and come with a huge amount of talent, knowledge and drive. Despite the recession, the number of London based Witom Group employees is set to increase by 45% in 2011 which demonstrates in part the success that the Group is enjoying.
